Forget the Chelsea Flower Show. Forget Kew Gardens. It’s The Matthew 25 Mission garden, outside Brodie Hall (next to Christ Church, on Seaside) that takes the prize now!!
Rudyard Kipling wrote: ‘Gardens are not made by singing “Oh how beautiful” and sitting in the shade.’
And that’s certainly true where the Mission garden is concerned!
Over the past few weeks, it’s been a rare moment indeed when Matthew 25 guests have not been seen working on the garden: even at weekends. Two men in particular have really taken the garden to heart: working tirelessly – raking, weeding, planting, mowing. The shed has been re-painted, and the greenhouse cleaned and moved.
Thanks to a grant from the Devonshire West Big Local fund, the Eastbourne Shed@ (run by Age Concern Eastbourne@) has constructed and provided attractive wooden frames and planters; and a new seat! Then a group of young people from The Prince’s Trust have just spent a week at the Mission, staining the frames, and donating and planting young trees.
The garden is a real blessing to our guests. As well as giving them a delightful place to relax outside, it provides a practical and natural means of encouraging them to care for things other than themselves. They can develop their gardening skills, as well as enjoy the satisfaction of growing produce that will be used in the Matthew 25 kitchen. <more photos>
